  Avoiding a bad web host

Jun 18, 2010

Have a quick Google and you’ll find a plethora of business web hosting nightmare tales. Many companies have their websites hosted without knowing it by teenagers. Questioning why the website and emails just suddenly fell off the face of the earth, and their host isn’t answering emails (well they won’t be able to!) or telephone. And the cause? Little Alex has been grounded for getting a detention and had his computer taken away as well. Ok, so its a hypothetical situation might sound a bit far fetched possibly? Have a look at Google again, there is much worse situations webmasters have found themselves in. Why? Well they ended up picking the wrong web hosting company. There might not be a foolproof way of weeding out bad hosts, there is some tips I will give you on typical signs on the website of the company. No contact address on the host’s website. Without a contact address starts to break the distance selling laws in the UK. What reputable business would not provide an address to write to in the event of an issue? Any buissness which has not given a mailing address sounds like a bad bedroom web host. Laying claims to having multiple datacentres, when they do not. I do not know about you, but I preffer doing my business with companies who are honest, or try to be honest. If you ran a small local shop, you wouldn’t claim to own a chain of supermarkets nationwide. This is the same for web hosts reckoning to ‘have’ their own datacentre. I will tell you now only a very few of the hosts actually have the resources to run a datacentre. Not owning your own datacentre isn’t neccessarily a bad thing. But a web host claiming they do when they don’t, is generally bad news. Speedy response to any emails sent? Being in the 21st century email is the choice of communication for most people. You have a few questions about the service you would want to send off an email with your queries in and get a response back to your inbox. Think if a company didn’t answer the phone- would you trust them with your business? Likewise if a hoisting company takes over a day to answer a email that does not look good. Well if it takes them so long to answer a sales email, which is what can make them some money, how long will they take if you need support? That said, don’t be fooled by the web host that responds to sales emails within minutes, but when you really do need help, couldn’t care less. What’s the hosts English like? A large indicator normally will be the professionalism of a web host, how does there spelling and grammar come across? You have no doubt come accross websites with wrongly spelt words who claim to be the ‘garetest’ web host on the ‘word wipe web’. If your potential host can’t spell, or worse case can’t take the time to spell check their website, the advertising pitch, how can you trust them to host your website? So how do I find a good web host? There are however a few trustworthy business class web hosts. The pointers we have given above are only just scratching the surface on spotting a bad host. Making your choice on a web host is very hard. If you are looking for a quality business class web host, then do your homework. Sear the internet for reviews, and also speak to existing customers. Google can dish the dirt brilliantly on a company. Try searching the company and find what comes up. Above all, remember when you pay for your hosting, pay monthly so you can move on if the host turns bad, and if the sticky stuff does hit the wall, make sure you have backups. Take care. visualmagic.co.uk
